How to Make Money with Yahoo Groups

As I was considering the purchase of a virtual advertising suite, I realized Yahoo Groups offered almost everything the virtual advertising suite was offering. Here are some of the features of Yahoo groups and how you can use them to help make money....

Newsletter Feature

That's right, you can offer a subscribed newsletter, promote the newsletter and gain more prospective clients to whom you may supply with information as well as promote your goods and services. Yahoo takes care of the double check to make sure the subscribers actually did subscribe and, though some users attempt to make work for the group owner, unsubscribe information can be found at the bottom of every email that goes out.

Discussion Feature

Some people, especially my primary niche group martial arts, aren't interested in monetizing their yahoo group. Some even get upset with the common signature file found in almost all out going emails conveying everything from jokes to legal information. Most group owners however have families of their own and don't fault established group members for making a living.

When I discovered how difficult it was to find a Yahoo group that would allow me to make book announcements for my bookstore, I simply started my own group Martial Arts Ads and Discussion. I was brand new to Yahoo groups at the time and didn't realize, much like forums, you need to establish yourself as a member before suggesting products or services.

The opportunity to network and even make good friends that you've never even met face to face is much greater with the discussion feature as opposed to the newsletter function. There's a greater chance for leaks monetarily speaking. Users mentioning products you yourself may not be associated with, but as an online marketing friend of mine said, "Give people what they want and eventually you'll get what you want.". In your discussion type group, don't spend all your time trying to sell. Share and receive good information, network, make friends, then make sales. It's a longer process but you stand a greater chance of a life long customer as opposed to a quick sale. I must admit my favorite part is the martial arts discussions themselves and getting to know fellow martial artists.

Add Your Links Feature

Just like the virtual office for which I was going to pay $20.00 per month (older site might still try this other one as of writing this got a free version and a $10.00 version), you can allow guests to add their links.

Make sure you set up both messages and links so the public can view them. Otherwise the search engines will not be able to crawl them and your guests will not be benefited by back links in group emails, messages or links.

Even though you set this up for public viewing, guests must first register and be logged into your group in order to add links and send emails. Thus you may contact them with your offers.

Files Section

You may use the files section, not only as storage for you and or your guests, but additionally as a means of sending automatic messages upon registering, leaving, banned, applying, every two weeks or every month. You can make these html messages, by uploading a web page or text messages. I do not believe text is hyperlinked by the way. Also if you are going to send html messages make sure you allow attachments in your group.

Calendar

Like almost all Yahoo functions the calendar may be turned off, used by moderators only or used by you and your guests. One item lacking in Yahoo groups that the virtual ad suite has is secrenous emails to give lessons or sales pitches. Most good sales pitches providing a lesson first by the way. Recently I realized, though you cannot set an order of first to last, you can setup articles as calendar reminders so your guests can get different content automatically on different days of the week. Your guests must not have No Email selected in order to receive your articles. As of writing this I have yet to implement this idea. I have a safelist in Yahoo where guests are allowed to send each other advertisements. I believe I'll offer this function to these guests.

Final Tips

The description should contain the keywords you'd like potential guests to find when searching in the Yahoo database. Don't forget to allow your group to be in the database so potential guests can find it. A picture is worth 1000 words so be sure to include an interesting picture that can be uploaded. Html is allowed in the description. I use it to link to the appropriate sections of my website. Use a blank target so a new window will open to your web page so your guests will still have the opportunity to join your Yahoo group without having to back track (never assume guests no how to do that).

Be sure to add an appropriate link in the section which allows you to do so. It will help to create more back links to your site thus helping your search engine ranking.

If anyone has any questions feel free to join one of my free Yahoo groups and send me an email .
