Bird Flu News
The bird flu has been reported inside Iraq. This also was similar to
the situation in 1918. Some soldiers from World War I came back to
their homeland and brought the disease back with them.
February
9th, 2006 -- Avian influenza has been reported inside Nigeria.
This has been the first case reported in Africa.
February 18th, 2006 -- Several birds that died in India have
been confirmed to be infected with the H5N1 strain of the bird flu.
Avian Flu 101
Just what exactly is the bird flu? You have heard about the topic in newspapers, in
magazines, and on television. The avian (bird) flu is a dangerous
virus that gets developed inside the intestines of wild birds. Wild
birds usually do not get very sick from the virus, but is very deadly
to chickens, ducks, and turkeys. Since 1997, there have been numerous
cases of infection in HUMANS. More than 85 people have died, and
several more people have been infected. The bird flu has infected
and/or killed people in multiple countries including Turkey, Vietnam,
China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Cambodia.
Just what exactly is a pandemic? A pandemic is a global disease outbreak. An
influenza pandemic occurs when a flu virus mutates into a stronger
virus that humans have little immunity for. When a global pandemic
begins there usually is very
little or NO vaccines to fight it (it can take up to 6 months to
develop a vaccine, but it may not be available to everyone). The mutated
influenza virus is very deadly.
It
gets passed from
person to person extremely easily, and spreads around the world very
quick. It can kill millions of
people.
Will the
"bird flu"
become pandemic? In order for a virus to become pandemic, it has to
emerge into a stronger virus that humans have little or no immunity
for. The "bird flu" itself isn't a big risk to humans, BUT
there have been confirmed cases of human deaths from a "bird
flu" subtype (H5N1). What does that mean? That means that there is
evidence that the "bird flu" is evolving into something else,
something stronger. Experts are not sure
whether the bird flu will become pandemic or not. That is why people
are preparing "just in case".
Are pandemics common?
It has been proven that there is usually at
least 1 major pandemic for every 100 years. The last major influenza pandemic
occurred in 1918 (see above).
How many people could die from
an influenza pandemic?
It is estimated that 2 to over 50 million people
worldwide could die from another influenza pandemic.
The H5N1 virus has killed more than
50% of people infected with it so far. The 1918 virus killed only
2% of people infected with it.
The only thing you can do right now is
prepare. Vaccines may not be available to everyone. We
may have shortages in antivirals and other medications as well.
Getting prepared is the one of the only steps you can do right now. We
urge you get prepared as soon as possible. You never know when the
next influenza pandemic will begin.
If a pandemic were to happen, who would be most
at risk?
The bird flu doesn't just kill people with weak immune
systems. The bird flu drives your immune system into overload, and
that is what kills people. Your own immune system kills you! Very healthy people have a very high
chance of dying from it. That means everyone would be at risk, not
just the elderly and babies. The 1918 pandemic killed more people between
the age of 20 and 40 years old, than any other age group.

A pandemic may cause the
health system to collapse
Health experts tell us "if a pandemic were to start tonight, the health
system may collapse". Hospitals and doctors offices are already full
today. A pandemic would cause swarms and swarms of people to flood the
hospitals. If the health system collapses that would mean that many people
may get turned away by hospitals.
All of that was
pretty depressing! But it is true...
Please, we don't want you to feel scared and
depressed over all of this. If you prepare ahead of time you don't have to be scared of the bird flu
or pandemic influenza.
Next time you hear the media talk about the bird
flu, listen to see if they are telling us how to prepare. Are they?
That is exactly why we
have created a downloadable ebook on "how to prepare for pandemic
influenza..."
