Child Fitness Toy - The Marauder of Monitors by Sensei J. Richard Kirkham B.Sc.

As a physical educator and martial arts instructor, I'm constantly concerned about the trend of children to spend more time with their faces buried in a game monitor than outside doing physical activities to help curb the 25% child obesity epidemic.

I have found for my son a well known toy I put off buying him which I call the marauder of monitors....

Wheels on Heels

Yes! The most popular brand name is Heelys. These shoes, with wheels that could replace the heel section of Heel shoes are making my son sweat!

They started out at a cost of over $100.00, but have recently, as of writing this article, dropped down to around $50.00.

It became a father - son activity

The first thing my son and I did was to look for videos on line on how the use the Heelys. We first found some on Youtube but then were directed to the Heely website itself. We studied the videos together, then we went outside to try them out.

I'd been trained as a spotter in gymnastics so I knew to give my son as little help as possible. At first he held my arm while I walked and he tried to keep his balance. Then he used a wall. During this time period he'd also enjoy having me pull him while we were walking around the mall or shopping at a store. He wiped out a few times trying things on his own. The biggest technique he had to learn was having one foot behind the other and not side by side.

On His Own Now

He doesn't need my help anymore but he enjoys having me pull him around occasionally. I let him take his Heelys anywhere we go. He's responsible for keeping the wheels in the same storage place in his backpack along with the tools and heel plugs to replace the wheels.

Even when we're walking somewhere or he's playing with his friends he still gets more exercise by wearing the Heelys. He runs to get momentum and glides along on the wheels one foot behind the other.

Conclusion

In this day and age of fast food, two or even three jobs and quite often forgetting the purpose of a parent's life which is to give their child and even better one, it's nice to have a tool as parents to help fight the on going crush of obesity and shorter life expectancy in children with a simple toy of shoes with wheels on them.

Obviously, except your own responsibility for accidents, see a physician blah blah blah, but if you've been putting off getting your child Heelys for any reason, after seeing my son sweat and exercise they now have my recommendation.
