When I started my tutoring and self-defense business, I ran a classified ad in the largest local paper which covered all of the small towns in the outlying areas. I remember getting my first call from that particular ad thus getting my first full time customer. I learned to use a computer originally to make my own self-defense fliers I now began making fliers for both in home tutoring and self-defense. Much of my sales training and p.r. training was now paying off as I was able to incorporate those skills into my flier design along with a call to action to contact me.

I did everything I possibly could to get and keep my name in front of people. Eventually when they thought of tutoring or self-defense, they thought of Sensei J. Richard Kirkham (another example of getting my name in front of people).

People miss so many opportunities to advertise for free or for very little. The fliers I passed out to businesses had instruction to please post for customers or staff since some businesses had a policy of not posting for customers. To save money, I made a flier that had the same thing in thirds. So the cost of one flier gave me three fliers after I cut them. I also used two side fliers so my prospect wouldn't see see a blank page. I used these fliers to place in doorways. Warning: you may get the clever idea of putting them in the mailboxes, this is not legal to do in the United States. Check with your local country’s laws to be certain you are not breaking them. It also not legal to send unsolicited faxes and not ethical to send unsolicited emails, since we are on the subject.

I received several calls each time I put these fliers in doorways, usually receiving one call for every 100 fliers I placed in doorways. I originally actually knocked on the doors and introduced myself as I handed the flier out and then asked if the person who answered the door had any questions. This is much more effective, I discovered, when done at nighttime, as those who answered the door during the day were either retired or out of work. As this was not my demographic target, when I placed the fliers in doorways I stopped knocking on doors during the day.

A much higher percentage of prospects will contact you if you give them instructions not just information. For example putting the word call before your phone number actually increases contact percentages. On my business card on the bottom it says “Please Post, Call, or Give to a Friend”. What are the chances they would follow my directions and at least post my business card? A lot better than if the prospect and prospective advertiser would not have been given directions as to what to do with the business card. Less chance of it being cleaned out of the prospect's wallet or purse and stuck in a drawer.



Creating the Need

All advertising must;

Create or show a problem or need

Show a solution to the problem

Show why they should come to you

This includes business cards (notorious for just displaying information), invoices, letterheads, and everything else your company has that prospects and clients see including your business name. Your name is important. It’s the first thing someone sees. Your name is one of the first things that decides if your prospect will look at your ad any further. As Steve Martin once pointed out – nobody wants to go to “Fred’s Bank”.

A name to go on the card is also important. I’ve had people who had competitors cards before contacting me because the prospect said it was not clear for whom to ask.

All of this happened about two years before the internet became popular. After that it became easier to offer more information, but the outline is still the same. “Why should I, a busy person, take time to look at your Internet site on your business card. I don’t have a problem, you didn’t show it too me. So I don’t need your solution.” Since then I have developed a floppy disk and business card size CD business card with the business card on the outside and information on the inside including, problem, solution, resume, printable fliers, business cards, and an order form for my products and services. This has drastically improved the inexpensive delivery of information to help the prospect to decide to buy from me or hire me for my services.

Addendum: I'm now using regular business cards as they're easier to get in bulk. I still like the idea of the CD business card and would still consider it if I could find a reasonable place to order them. Only one place I've seen thus far will do it but their setup fee seems a bit high to me. I may continue to make them later but now I'll make them with links including order links to my website http://KirkhamsEbooks.com .



Acting Like a Big Business?

One big mistake I see is small businesses or individually owned businesses trying to look and act like a big faceless company. Look at what the big businesses are doing. The big companies are try hard to look like small caring companies that know you by name when you walk through the door. I have personally found, that people want to deal with people. In fact, many clients prefer dealing with a small business owner to help that business owner out as opposed to a faceless chain of stores.

Conclusion

When you're self-employed, just starting out and wondering from where your next pay check is coming, don't be afraid to think outside of the box. You're going to hear a lot of your hours for dollars "friends" tell you how stupid this and that is. When you've finally had enough of that ask them where they see themselves in 10 years. Most people don't even want to see themselves that far in advance since they can see themselves doing the same job they hate.

Insanity can be defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
